Our team headed to the orphanage yesterda, ready to roll up their sleeves, meet the kids and begin putting our Xperience Humaniti mission into action.
And what a first day it was.
More Than a Service Project
When we talk to our students about humanitarian service, one of the most important lessons we emphasize is that meaningful service isn't simply about arriving somewhere and completing a project.
It's about people.
Today, our students had their first opportunity to put that lesson into practice.
They spent time getting to know the children at the orphanage—playing, talking, laughing and simply being present. Language differences quickly became less important as games, smiles and laughter took over.
What began as a group of students arriving somewhere completely new quickly became a day filled with connection.
Those moments are an important part of why Xperience Humaniti exists. We want young people to understand that sometimes the most meaningful thing you can give someone isn't something you can pack in a suitcase.
It's your time, attention and willingness to connect.
Rolling Up Our Sleeves 🎨
Of course, there was plenty of work to be done too!
Our students grabbed paint brushes and got to work helping paint and refresh areas of the orphanage.
It was messy, it was hot, and there may have been almost as much paint on a few of our students as there was on the walls by the end—but the team jumped right in. 😂
They worked alongside one another, shared jobs, helped where they were needed and began learning what it means to contribute as part of a team.
Seeing our students balance the physical work with spending time with the children was exactly what we hoped their first day of service would look like.
Serve. Learn. Lead.
Those three words are at the centre of every Xperience Humaniti experience.
Serve by showing up and contributing.
Learn by listening, observing and allowing the people and places around us to teach us something.
Lead by taking responsibility, supporting one another and recognizing that leadership doesn't always mean being the person in charge.
Our students had the opportunity to experience all three.
And perhaps most importantly, they began to see that humanitarian work isn't about arriving with all the answers. It's about working alongside others, building relationships and approaching every experience with respect, curiosity and humility.
A First Day We Won't Forget 🧡
There is something special about watching a group of young people step into an unfamiliar environment and slowly become more comfortable.
This morning there were nerves and plenty of unknowns.
By the end of the day, there were stories to tell, new connections, tired students, paint-covered clothes and a lot of smiles.
And this is only the beginning.
Over the coming days, our students will continue serving, learning about the community around them, challenging themselves and discovering what they're capable of when they step outside their everyday lives.
